Minun valintani - My choice

My choice

Presidential elections are value elections. Deciding about foreign and security policy is, naturally, the most important job of the president, but that's not the only thing these elections are about. They are also about where Finland is going as a country and a nation. The main differences between the candidates can be seen in one candidate's interest in issues of controlling and managing globalisation and embracing international cooperation and the other's critique towards this as mismanagement of domestic interest. While following the discussions it is good to stop to think about the concept of national interest and also about that what we Finns would like our country to represent on the international arena.

For Finns who believe in a strong welfare state, it is a matter of utmost importance to send a message to the world that we want to build a society where human rights overcome the economic interests. The strongest message we can send is by electing a president who will defend these values both in home and abroad. Tarja Halonen is that president. Mr. Niinistö’s foreign policy, at least when it comes to the themes presented in his campaign, would mainly concentrate on improving Finnish industry’s chances to export its products. Is this enough for us Finns? Would this be our contribution to the international community and to address global problems? To run away from responsibilities and not to look for solutions to the problems and challenges facing each one of us in Finland and abroad?

Tarja Halonen is a president, of which every Finn can be proud of. Her work is known throughout the world and not only because she is one of the still too few female presidents around. She is known for her hard work in the UN, International Labour Organisation ILO and the Helsinki process. Tarja Halonen speaks of and works for the whole world and its citizens, not only for the commercial interest of her own country. We can only imagine what is the value of this message in a world where millions and millions of people live from hand to mouth. This is much more valuable to our country and improves our international position much more than a few extra orders for Patria Industries because of pleasing the right people at the right time.

To the end of it all, I also choose a person. For me Tarja Halonen has always been a person who cares and worries about people whose voice is marginalized. To end all the misery in the world –or even in Finland- is a task a president, whoever he or she is, can’t do alone. But his or her role is important in the process of building a better, safer and more just world, namely the progress towards a better future which we need. My opinion is that this force of change and the values I appreciate in life meet their best match in Tarja Halonen.

Thanks Phil! I'm trying to pull myself together for occasional blogging in English in the future about other themes too. Would be nice to have you and other English-speaking bloggers here and abroad as conversation partners too.

Esa, Tarja would have had my vote if I were born in Finland, you know that. AND: congrats to the victory, I knew you would do it. Looking forward to reading your blog again when you publish in English!

Yes, we'd love to hear more in English from you!!

Here's one English-request: Antti Kalliomäki's and SDP's fight to end private schools in Finland. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.
